At 7:30 AM on June 26th, 2014, I checked into St. Joseph's Hospital to be induced. My family had arrived the night before to care for Lillian, I had my last good night of sleep, my hair was curled, everything was as ready as it was going to get before the arrival of Baby Girl #2.
My doctor broke my water at about 8:30 AM and I was started on Pitocin. After a few hours with no progress, even with the Pitocin, it became clear that it was going to be a long day. I am no good at sitting around so Josh and I walked and talked, and talked and walked, all around the Labor and Delivery floor. We probably walked for two hours and still there was no progress. So we went back to my room and ate Popsicles, talked to nurses, and Josh took a nap.
Finally, at about 1:00 PM, my nurse got orders from my doctor to start aggressively upping my doses of Pitocin. By the time Josh woke up from his nap I was sweating and gritting my teeth, ready for an epidural but still there was no real progress being made. This baby, like Lillian before her, did not want to come out! It wasn't until I got my epidural at that the ball started rolling. Pretty soon, Baby Girl #2 was ready to make her appearance and now she was in a hurry! I told my nurse I needed to push and so she called my doctor. I heard my doctor say,"I will be there in about 45 minutes, after my next appointment." I shook my head furiously, "We don't have 45 minutes!" I said. "She needs to come now!" I thought for sure Josh was going to have to deliver the baby because the doctor wouldn't make it in time. She did make it in time though, but just barely!
At 3:50 PM, Freya Lynn Padilla and I took our first look at each other. She scared me because she was so quiet and so small! She weighed 6.14 pounds and was 18 inches long, a good pound smaller than her sister. I had not expected such a little girl!
Soon after Freya was born my family arrived to meet her. Lillian was very sweet and happy to see us all. She brought her new little sister a present and held her Baby Freya.
We stayed in the hospital for two days and enjoyed our time getting to know Freya. Our stay was comfortable and nice but I was glad to go home and be with Lillian.
We just couldn't get over how tiny Freya was! Lillian was a nice little chunky baby and Freya looked so skinny. My mom took this picture to send to my sister so she could see how teensy Freya was.
Lillian took being a big sister in stride. She was fascinated with Freya and seemed to understand right away that Freya is part of our family now.
While I was in the hospital, my dad went and picked up our other new baby, Benjamin. Lillian calls him her "favorite teeny tiny horse." He is a Miniature Horse who was born on March 26, 2014, Lillian's birthday. He is just so cute I want to squeeze him! So far he fits in with the rest of our family very well.
I feel like one phase of our life has ended and a new phase has begun. I am nervous about this new phase but I know, once I get the hang of things, it will be just as wonderful, if not more wonderful, than the last. I feel so blessed to have two beautiful healthy girls in my life. They make me want to be the best I can be! Wish us luck with both Freya and little Benjamin. Another adventure has begun!
