About four weeks ago Josh joined the Old Pueblo Rugby team. When he told me he wanted to try playing I was excited because since college I have secretly wanted to be with a rugby boy. Josh played football in high school and wrestled in high school and college but has never played rugby so I was interested to see how this new hobby of his would turn out. So far he enjoys it and comes home from practice full of stories. It is a complicated game and he is still trying to figure out the rules and get used to wearing short shorts.
I had never actually seen a rugby match until this past weekend. Josh and I drove to Flagstaff and spent all day Saturday at ta rugby tournament.
I was shocked at how big and hairy the guys were. There was nothing pretty or even remotely feminine about them. Josh looked like a little boy out there with his whiskerless baby face.
I was shocked at how hard these guys hit each other! They don't mess around! These hairy amateurs make football players look like wimps in their helmets and pads. Either rugby players are tougher than football players or dumber, I'll let you decide.
They do this weird thing where they lift each other up, throw the ball, and then try to hit it away from the other team.
This is called the scrum. They grab hold of each other and push while trying to grab the ball with their feet and push it out of the scrum to their team mate on the outside.
I learned a few things while I was watching this tournament. Some of these things may seem obvious to you but I am used to my sport where things are organized and there are rules.
